Payout buffer and days to payout, explained

Updated September 21, 2026 · 3 min read

Passing the evaluation and getting funded feels like the finish line. It isn't quite — most firms still gate your first withdrawal behind two more things: a payout buffer (extra profit you have to bank first) and a days-to-payout cadence (how often the request window even opens). Miss either one and "funded" doesn't mean "payable" yet.

What a payout buffer actually is

A payout buffer is a dollar amount of profit — above your starting balance — that has to be sitting in the account before you can request a payout at all. It isn't your profit target (that's what got you funded in the first place); it's a second, separate cushion some firms require on the funded account itself.

The reason is your max loss limit. If a firm let you withdraw the instant you were $1 in profit, a payout could pull your balance right back down through your own drawdown floor — the buffer exists so a withdrawal can't do that.

Apex's $50K EOD Trail funded account has a $2,000 max loss limit and a $2,100 payout buffer — exactly $100 more than the max loss limit itself. You need $2,100 of banked profit above your starting balance, not just any profit above $0, before Apex will let you request a payout.

Not every firm requires one

Funded Futures Family's Premier+ account sets its payout buffer at $0 — no cushion requirement at all. The max loss limit still applies the same way it always does; there's just no separate profit threshold gating a payout on top of it. Whether a firm requires a buffer, and how big it is, is entirely a product design choice — it isn't a version of the same rule everyone has, so don't assume yours works like the last firm's account you had.

How the major firms do it

Days to payout is the request cadence, not a one-time wait -- it's how often the window reopens for the life of the funded account, not just the first time. Verified against each firm's own site as of Sep 13, 2026 (oldest of the firms shown).

  • Apex and Blue Guardian — both set the buffer at exactly max loss limit + $100, and both open a payout window on a fixed cadence (every 5 days for Apex, every day for Blue Guardian) rather than the moment the buffer's met.
  • Lucid — LucidPro follows the same max-loss-plus-$100 pattern shown above, but it's a per-product choice, not a firm-wide one: LucidFlex, a different product from the same firm, drops the buffer to $0 entirely. → Lucid Trading rules, explained
  • Take Profit Trader — buffer is set at exactly the max loss limit, no extra cushion on top, with a payout window that reopens daily.
  • Funded Futures Family — no buffer at all (see above); the max loss limit is doing all the protective work here, same as some firms skip a standalone daily loss limit entirely and lean on their drawdown rule instead.

The table above is pulled live from the same rules data Tradervana uses, so it tracks each firm's current numbers — but always confirm the specifics for your account size and plan before you trade.

What to actually do about it

  • Check your buffer number specifically — it can be $0, exactly your max loss limit, or max loss plus a fixed cushion, and it can differ between two products from the same firm. Don't assume it matches whatever your last funded account required.
  • Track distance to the buffer, not just profit above $0. Being "in profit" and being "payout-eligible" are two different lines until you've confirmed they're the same number for your account.
  • Remember the cadence is separate from the buffer. Clearing the buffer early doesn't open the request window early if the payout cycle hasn't come around yet — the two gates are independent, and both have to be open at the same time.
